Sustainable Forest Management is a Key Strategy to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Indonesia

The RAFT program was invited to present on lessons learned from improved forest management practices in Indonesia and how such practices can support a reduction in carbon emissions at the seminar on ‘Production Forest and REDD’ organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry on December 3, 2009, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Forestry, Mr. Boen Purnama, delivered the keynote address, which brought over 50 participants from national and local government, the private sector, and NGOs. The RAFT program has offered practical lessons on how sustainable forest management practices can be a leading strategy under the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) mechanism in Indonesia. The presentation received a positive response from participants and enhanced their understanding of the importance of sustainable forest management as part of Ministry of Forestry-led efforts to reduce emissions at the country-level.Lao PDR Launches New Partnership to Strengthen Sustainable Forest Sector Development

On 19 November 2009, The WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) and The Forest Trust (TFT) launched a collaborative partnership for Lao PDR towards strengthening sustainable forestry practices and forest industry links to international markets. This new initiative will help Lao timber processing companies to obtain raw materials from certified, well-managed forest areas to secure their production output and increase exports of Lao wood products that are sourced legally and sustainably. The RAFT program and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) provided support for the partnership that was developed to assist the Government of Lao to develop a sustainable and competitive forest industry that contributes to poverty alleviation. The launch generated positive responses from attendees representing government officials, the private sector and NGOs. Among the attendees were the Lao Minister for Industry and Commerce and the US Ambassador for Lao PDR who extended their support to the initiative.

Legal and Certified Forest Market Conference a SUCCESS!

The International Conference on Forest, Markets, Policy and Practice that took place on 8-9 September in Shanghai, China has brought more than 350 participants from 170 organizations. The conference explored emerging policies by the EU, China, and the USA aimed at addressing illegal and unsustainable trade in forest products, and then focused on the leading industry responses to the effect of these policies as “game changing”. Ultimately, the conference provided companies now leading responsible growth in China with a firm understanding of emerging public policies that are changing forest product markets and with clear guidance on how to engage these opportunities.

Legal & Certified Forests and Forest Products in Asia Pacific: Harmonizing Policy and Practice
On 8-9 September, over 380 participants from 10 countries representing businesses, governments and non government organizations (NGOs) gathered in Shanghai , China for the Legal and Certified Forests and Forests Products in Asia Pacific Conference. The conference was sponsored by the State Forestry Administration of China’s International Forestry Cooperation Center and the RAFT Program. The Chinese Academy of Forestry, Rainforest Alliance and WWF's Global Forest & Trade Network played important roles in the organization of the event. The conference has created a platform for all stakeholders to bring solutions for global challenge of the increasing demand of legal and certifed forest products. This event has also provided opportunity to strengthening regional cooperation on forest management and trade of timber products, one of key objectives of the RAFT program.
